Using the PMP Head First book is quite tolerable. However, I found that this book calculated forward/backward pass numbers on a network diagram differently than Rita Mulcahy's prep book.

This book starts the 1st activity's ES as 1; Rita says to start at 0. This changes all subsequent numbers.

Does anyone know which is used on the real PMP exam?

I suggest you refer the PMBOK guide as well which says that first activity ES should be 1. We may have to understand which convenient logic can be used here. Generally, as the activities start on the first day of the schedule, it becomes nearly obvious to denote the ES as 1, and the resulting EF (after including the time period) must be a number that exactly counts the time period. You must also understand how the numbering convention is followed for the subsequent activities. The ES of next activity should be a consecutive number of the previous activity EF. Similar concept will be followed for the LS and LF as well.
