Have to learn Java for new job, so after previous good experience with Head Into series (Python and PHP) I bought a used Head Into Java.

How do I open a java console where I can enter the line commands the tutorials say where to compile then run the java classes?

The book give a 1-2-3 instruction:
1 Save MyFirstApp.java
2 Compile javac MyFirstApp.java
3 Run
but doesn't tell me how or what to open to to compile or run anything!!!

So 2 questions:
1. How do I open a java console on Windows XP?
2. How do I run the compiled class?

I DO know how to do so in Eclipse, but HIJ said to NOT use an IDE until Chapter 16.

I'm trying to keep it simple and in line with the tutorial.

Here's the state of my box:

My Windows XP box (supposed to get upgraded to Win7 sometime...) has Eclipse Kepler already and I installed Java Development Kit ( jdk-7u45-nb-7_4-windows-i586.exe ).

Entered Start, My Computer, Advanced, Environment Variables, and appended my working file directory containing my *.java files.

Entered Start, Control Panel, Java to open the Java Control panel
Checked Java console - Show console

Thanks in advance!
