I am just getting started with this and I was wondering whether this book is still up to date since it was written about Java 5 and it seems that the Java website says that Java 7 came out last month. Were there major changes between versions? Will this book still teach me what I need to know to take the Sun exam? Is there going to be a new book version?

Thanks, and sorry in advance if this is sort of a crazy question.

The "Head First Java" is a great book to start basics of Java and then slowly it will take to some advance topics.
After finishing this, you will get overall knowledge with lots of practice with Java.

There are few differences of Java 5.0 to Java se 7. There are some increase in no. of classes written inside it.
There is a link to clear you " why to learn Java 7" but ATLEAST DO THAT AFTER CLEAR UNDERSTANDING OF BASICS.

Why to learn Java 7

Still if you are curious about Java 7; you can follow the below links.

1. Java SE 7 Docs "The best way to learn Java, also the hard way !"

2. A Fantastic book from the same author of Head first Java (this book is for the Java SE 7 programmer's exam)

3. For the SCJP exam or now Java SE 7 programmer's exam

4. An awesome book from SAMS

5. Complete reference from Herbert Schildt

But do read all those books after reading your "Head First Java". It will develop the very basic foundation for Java.

Enjoy !! :) B)
