I get as far as the terminal and I get a failure because the environment is read only. Any ideas?

Please check the bottom of page 264. You have your slashes the wrong way around - it should read /sdcard/sl4a/scripts. What you have tries to copy the file to your windows filesystem, hence the read-only filesystem error.

Success! Thank you! Just a note, and now I am embarrassed to say but I spent 6 hours trying to figure that out.......

Never worry. In my experience, it is always something small (and often obvious) that stumps us. It happens to everyone.

I'm glad you are up-and-running. :-)
