Hi,

On page 95, after creating my AJAX Web Form, putting an UpdatePanel and then dragging the previously created controls (which I copied from my other standard web form) into it, you say there should be a smart tag I can click.

But I can't seem to have a smart tag, neither for the UpdatePanel, nor for the controls inside the UpdatePanel. The only controls which seem to have a smart tag are those that had one before being dragged into the UpdatePanel (like a GridView control).

I have 3.5sp1 and vs2008sp1 professionnal.

Thanks,

David

I think I understand one has to have the AJAX Control Toolkit installed to have such a feature which is unfortunate.

Hopefully the rest of the book doesn't rely on having that toolkit installed since a lot of people have reported it being buggy/not suitable for production environment.

Hi David,

As you have correctly surmised, you need to install the AJAX Control Toolkit to do the extended version of the demo page. Instructions on how to install it can be found in Appendix A. Each introduction to a control uses first the control by itself and then introduces the extensions that the Toolkit provides.

If you don't want to install the Toolkit then fine, but in fairness, most AJAX extensions to the ASP.NET server controls are no less buggy than it is and it is also being integrated into ASP.NET 4.0, so it's also useful to learn for the future.

Thanks, Dan
