My book version of Head First PHP and MySQL was copy written in 2009 apparently. I suppose that explains why I was able to install Apache okay using the appendix, but I'm lost as to how to get PHP onto my system. Anyone know where I should go to download PHP onto a Windows Vista or Windows 7 computer (I have both) with Apache 2.0.64? Which version should I get and is there anything I need to know ahead of time?

I finally found that I'm supposed to be installing :

VC6 x86 Thread Safe (2011-Mar-22 13:29:30)

I installed it but got this error message:

"Error trying to access httpd.com you will need to manually configure the web server"

Just install WampServer if your on a Windows machine or MAMP if you have a MAC. It installs everything you need to get up and going fast.

I had that problem, also. The reason was because during the installation process you are asked to choose a directory for installation and also one for apache configuration. On the first one, for installation, you can just click the next button, but on the second one, for apache configuration, you have to click the browse button and point it directly to the folder where httpd.conf is located. On my windows 7 install it was c:/Program Files(x86)/Apache Software Foundation/Apache 2.2/conf/. That should eliminate that error.
