Standard Deviation

I am really struggling with standard deviations and how to figure out what they are. Page 110 SD really threw me.

I'm a little confused - standard deviations are not covered in Head First Physics. The 'sd' on page 110 stands for significant digits, which are introduced on pages 36-41.
