Dealloc And Automatic Reference Counter

In the Chapter 1 exercises, there is no mention of (or I overlooked) the automatic reference counter. It seems that dealloc is optional in xCode 4.2.

Is it necessary or recommended to build the exercises with automatic reference counting turned off?
