I looked for a few other editors besides Eclipse for Android development - popular ones like IntelliJ and Netbeans (does anyone use Netbeans?)

Looks like there's a project for IntelliJ here and something for NetBeans here.

If anyone decides to go off the beaten path and try another editor, let us know here how that goes.

One of the fellows in the classroom, Steve, was typing the code in IntelliJ as Tony was talking about it. Him and I had been using Eclipse trying our own Android app development and had learned a few things, so (1) we knew pretty much what to generate and (2) his IDE of choice is IntelliJ, so he could do all the generate and completions he knew to race to keep up, thus his choice of IntelliJ.

I think it would be very hard type it all live, if you weren't practiced on your IDE to help you code and hadn't at least read about a few of the bits Tony was talking about, so didn't have to wait until the end of the discussion before typing (or typing before you understood what was going on).
