Hi,

I'm a newbie and am having problems loading Chapter three. During step 4 of the install process, "Install Profile", I get the following error message:
Allowed memory size of 8388608 bytes exhausted (tried to allocate 374461 bytes) in <b>/Application/XAMPP/xamppfiles/htdocs/drupal/includes/database.mysqli.inc</b> on line<b> 303</b> <br/>

In case there's something I've left out, I'm attaching a screen shot of the error message.

Any thoughts on how I can overcome this problem so I can open Chapter 3?

I'd appreciate any and all help.

Thanks,
Stuart J

Mac OS 10.4.11

I discovered the solution to the problem and wanted to post it here in case anyone in future does a search about this.

Do a search on your computer for the following file: php.ini

Once that file is open in a text editor, do a search on "mb"

It will take you here, with the "mb" in the last line highlighted (your search criteria):
;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;
; Resource Limits ;
;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;

max_execution_time = 30 ; Maximum execution time of each script, in seconds
max_input_time = 60 ; Maximum amount of time each script may spend parsing request data
memory_limit = 8M ; Maximum amount of memory a script may consume (8MB)

___________________________________

When I was installing chapter 3 it recommended increasing the memory to 16 mb. I did that, and I was able to completely install Drupal and work in Chapter three for a while, but I again ran into the exhausted memory warning somewhere into the chapter (can't remember where exactly). but 16MBs didn't seem to be enough mempory allocated to PHP. So, I upped it to 128 in this line in both places"

memory_limit = 128M ; Maximum amount of memory a script may consume (128MB)

Save the "php.ini" file and you should be good to go.

BTW, I'm running XAMPP on a local Mac drive, not out on the internet.

I hope this helps.

Thanks,
Stuart

The increase of max_execution_time fixed it for me. The timeout didn't happen and the install script completed. Thanks StuartJ!
