I've finally made it through chapter 2, I went back and reinstalled and rebuilt to try to fix response time problems, which didn't help so I'm really behind sad.gif

Now I can't get permalinks to work correctly. I followed the text and went into settings>permalinks and set the radial button to date and name. wordpress says then that my url should bhttp://www.sweet-stitches.com/WORDPRESS/index.php/2010/12/09/sample-post/. Then I went back to the page titled contact and pressed the update button. When I key http://www.sweet-stitches.com/WORDPRESS/in.../12/09/contact/ I get a error screen from wordpress, not the browser, saying not found.

I looked for the .htaccess file on my host, webhost4life, and can't find it even though the settings say invisible files are viewable.

Anybody else having trouble with this??

I've decided to give up. I don't need pretty URLs

I contacted my webhost provider and was told I'm still running on windows, I thought I had been moved to UNIX, so I don't have an .htaccess file but I could upload one. I built an .htaccess file based on the code in the book and uploaded it and now I get IIS errors.

So I backed that off and moved on. Maybe by the end of the course I will be through chapter 3

@Susanne C

Pretty URLs are not required, but it does make everything look a bit cleaner. It's probably not worth the hassle of setting these up on a Windows server--as that is not a recommended system.

Here is a post on running WordPress off a Windows server: http://timheuer.com/blog/archive/2010/05/1...erver-2003.aspx

Not sure if you have this kind of access though.

This may not help the OP but for those having the same issue but on your local host using WAMP... I had to activate "rewrite_module" for the Apache server in WAMP.

I figured this out from this thread: http://www.phpfreaks...?topic=157952.0
