I recently purchased the "Head First SQL" book, and I'm at the point of installing the MySQL installation (Appendix ii, pages 544-547). Since this book was published in 2007, MySQL 5.0 has been upgraded to MySQL 5.1. The author's directions are dated along with the website screenshots.

My computer has Windows XP machine (32-Bit, I have administrative rights) installed on it.

Because the books directions reflect the older version and website, I'm confused as to which installation package and install type.

The author also mentions "MySQL Query Browser." Is this part of the installation package for MySQL 5.1?

I would read the MySQL documentation on the MySQL site. I am not really sure what your question is though. The docs list on the site also has a huge section of tutorials.

I suggest that you always use a Custom install, and select everything that you can during the install.

I have not had any issues with installing MySQL. I have many version of many different databases loaded on a single server.

Hello Andrew,
For the SQL you can have two options i.e.:
1. Install SQL Server standalone the same you are doing and using right now. It does not comes with the SQL Browser window but will come with command prompt. You need to run all the SQL statements from command prompt.
2. You can MySQL Admin freeware that will give you a software application to manage the SQL. One such is toad. Please visit http://www.toadworld...61/Default.aspx for more info.
3. There are some of the servers wrapped into single stack to use with the development for example if you want to do the PHP based development along with MySQL you can use:
xampp: http://www.apachefri...g/en/xampp.html or for windows more easy option is:
WAMP: http://www.wampserver.com/en/

This will give you PHPMyADMIN a browser based interface to manage SQL Databases, Tables and SQL Statements...
