Up-to-date Program Has Ended; Fully Updated Version Available As An Ebook

This is a note to everyone who's purchased Essential Silverlight 2 Up-to-Date or has been following the discussion around this book and it's updatable format.

With the third and final update to the book now available, we've made the decision to publish the book as a fully updated eBook going forward. The Up-to-Date format with downloadable, printable updates was a worthwhile experiment but for a number of reasons we're not planning to go forward with the format at this time.

What we're doing: reaching out to everybody who purchased the print version and giving them access to the fully updated eBook. If you purchased the book on www.oreilly.com and/or registered the book on www.oreilly.com you should already have a copy in your oreilly.com account; if you haven't received it you can contact our customer service team at orders@oreilly.com.

I'm happy to answer any questions that anybody has about the book, the up-to-date program, this shift to eBook only format for this title...anything!

Thanks again for all of the interest in this title, and in O'Reilly!

Updates, Roll Ups, Better Web Notes, Comment On Pages

I know there are other threads RE: roll-up updates, but I thought I would start a new thread to make some noise.

I like the concept of updates, thinking laterally like this is likely to keep tech books like this used instead of just going to PDF versions.

My frustrations are:
1) On the download page it didn't say - apply 1 and then 2.
2) Having to apply both updates when I got the book today is costly in terms of my time and would make me not buy this kind of book - SUPPLY ROLL-UP versions including all updates to date.
3) I don't have time to feed all the pages in and turn them over to get duplex on my cheap printer so each side of each page needs to say it is update 2, otherwise I find myself in the position I am in now!

I have been working through update 2 from the index back (it was easier as this is the way my printer stacks the paper). After subbing about 25% of the changes I realise that I need to apply uypdate 1 first. I now realise I don't have time for this right now and have stacked them on the side to do later.

I WILL HAVE NO IDEA WHAT I NEED TO DO WHEN I COME BACK TO IT!

I am smiling, but frustrated :-)

Going From Purchase To Update 2 Painful - Need Rollups

I purchased this book last night at the local Borders, and thought the concept was brilliant.

I was excited to see that the book was already up to update 2, so I downloaded the PDFs and got to work. After figuring out how to get the update to print double sided in my single sided printer (some basic instructions on the uptodate site on the proper Acrobat reader print settings would have been quite helpful) I used the included paper and had my updates in hand.

After getting a few pages into it, I realized that some of the page content in the update weren't matching up with the previous content in the book.

After some hunting around, I realized that this update assumed that I had already done the update 1 changes to the book.

While I understand that for people that have following along since the beginning, and only need the incremental changes. But for new buyers of your book, having a full update to the current version should be a requirement. Ideally you would also be able to get rolled up version of changes from any update version to the current one as well. Since the author makes a point of talking about having to learn a new XML format for defining the content of the book, presumably you have an automated diffing process that should make this trivial.

Besides just the convienience of having a rollup, it is important from a conservation standpoint as well (both conserving the non-standard blank paper that came with the book, as well as general environmental friendliness). I looked carefully at both the update 1 and update 2 changes, and of the 78 pages included in update 1, 46 of them are replaced again in update 2, leaving only 32 pages that I actually need from update 1.

I'm now going through and printing just those pages out, but it has taken my hope of a quick update and turned it into a multi-hour chore.

For other people running into this, here are the pages that you need from update 1 before applying update 2:
1.1.3-1.1.6
1.4.1-1.4.2
2.1.1–2.1.2, 2.1.25–2.1.28
2.6.1-2.6.20

Again, I really like the concept, but the biggest impediment to it being successful is how much work are people going to be willing to do in order to keep their book up-to-date. If you want this to be successful, you need to make it as painless as possible.

Other stores (Amazon, Barnes and Nobel, etc.) show the book as out of stock. Any word on when Essential Silverlight 2 Up-To-Date will be available for purchase? I'm very looking forward to purchasing this title. Thanks much!

What Up-to-date Titles Would You Like To See Next?

Deciding to use use the Up-to-Date format for Silverlight 2 was a no brainer. MIX 08 was just around the corner, and we knew Beta 1 would be released there. What better time and place could there be to put an updateable book into the hands of Microsoft developers. Besides, we knew that Silverlight 2 would be made available to the public through an orchestrated and mostly predictable series of releases: Beta 1 would be followed by Beta 2, and Beta 2 by a release to the web and so on. With our up-to-date format, we could provide developers with an innovative product that would stay current, no matter how many times Microsoft changed Silverlight before its final release. Plus, we could also correct mistakes and add overlooked content that our readers thought was important.

So now that you've seen the product, what other subjects should we publish in this format? Tell us what you'd like us to tackle next.
