Hello ... I am new to this forum and to Aperture. I have learned a lot by reading, but currently I am at a stumbling block.

Here is what I want my workflow to look like.

- Create a "version" and adjust it
- Create an "album" and just put in the "version" into the album (which would represent the best photo I want in the album. Aperture keeps transferring both the "master" AND the "version" into the album. I realize that the master is never compromised, but I don't want both the master and the version to show in the album
- Export my pictures to Flickr via my desktop ... and I only want my "version" to go there - NOT the masters also. I HAVE selected export only "versions" but it downloads both the master and the version together.

Can someone help me find a work around so that ONLY the versions appear in the album and ONLY versions are downloaded to the desktop.

Thanks

assign at least one star to each photo you want to go to Flickr, then in the lower right corner in the film strip view select the spyglass and filter for at least 1 star. just the pic to be downloaded will show up then download to flickr

Hi pizelli:

- Create a "version" and adjust it

When you import images into Aperture, the software already creates a Version for every imported image, so that you always edit Versions, leaving the Master intact. Hence, there is no need for you to use the "New Version from Master" command, but if you do, you create an additional Version, and what you see on screen, then, are two Versions, not Master and Version (even though the Versions will look exactly like the Master until you edit them). Consequently, you can simply skip this step.

- Create an "album" and just put in the "version" into the album (which would represent the best photo I want in the album. Aperture keeps transferring both the "master" AND the "version" into the album.

When you create new Versions, Aperture puts these into a Stack, as indicated by the number icon in the top-left corner of the Stack, as well as the darker-gray background behind the images inside the Stack.

Now, when you move one image of a stack to another location like an Album or Light Table, you move all other images inside the Stack with it. So, what has happened in your workflow so far is that you created another Version from the selected image's Master, Aperture put these two into a Stack, and you moved both images to the newly created Album. That's why both show up in that target location.

If you only want to move a single image, select any image in the Stack and select Unstack from the Stacks menu (or hit Cmd-Shift-K) first.

- Export my pictures to Flickr via my desktop ... and I only want my "version" to go there

As mentioned earlier, all images shown in Aperture's Browser are Versions. Hence, if you use the Export → Version(s) command without selecting specific images first, all images that you see in the Project (or Album, etc.) will be exported. As soon as you select specific images in the Browser, this command will only export those selected images, regardless of whether they are contained in a Stack, or not.

Alternatively, you can export the Versions of the selected images by dragging-and-dropping them from Aperture to your Mac's Desktop.

Bottom line: to simplify your workflow, do this:

* import the images into Aperture
* Select those images you want to upload to Flickr and choose File → New from Selection → Album (or just hit Cmd-L)
* Edit the images as needed (without creating additional Versions!)
* Export the Versions
* Upload them to Flickr with your uploading tool of choice

Hope this helps.

Greetings,

Jochen.

P.S.: To make uploading your images to Flickr even easier, have a look at Fraser Speirs's FlickrExport for Aperture plugin. (Note that there's also a free version with reduced features available.)

Are there any work flows similar to this one , but for movies instead of pictures? Looking to do something similar but with imovie instead of aperture.

Very nice post with a ton of informative information. I really appreciate the fact that you approach these topics from a stand point of knowledge and information
instead of the typical “I think” mentality that you see so much on the internet these days.
