Linux has a powerhouse networking stack, and truckloads of great networking utilities for all kinds of jobs. You can use Linux for nearly every networking chore there is; it's not necessary to spend all kinds of money on commercial networking products.

Tip of the day: iftop is a slick little utility that displays network activity in realtime in a top-like interface, with simple bar graphs to show bandwidth usage per host. Quick and easy to see who's connecting to your system.

Another cool little top-like utility is ntop, which has its own recipe in the Linux Networking Cookbook. It makes nice graphs of activity all over your network:
