One of the challenges for a tech book publisher is to create relevant and great books in a timely fashion. Microsoft's Silverlight 2 won't be formally released until the fall of '08, but you want information about it now, so what's a publisher to do?
The concept of an updateable book has been kicked around for a while, but we think we found the winning combination: a cool binder/presentation, an amazing author who works on insane deadlines, and a fascinating Microsoft technology (as well as a wonderful team at Microsoft). This all adds up to a book that will be continually updated until the final release of Silverlight 2. -------------------- Laurel R.T. Ruma

Thanks for your post. This project has been and continues to be a work in progress...almost a beta, if you will.
Your comments about the binder are appreciated; we're exploring other binder options and plan to ship them out to everyone who purchased Essential Silverlight 2 with the old binders when they are available. I hear your comments re. releasing another book when this book has received it's final update. The plan is to release an Essential Silverlight 2.0 (or whatever the version is) that will be an entirely revamped, new second edition, which we have been considering a completely new book, not just an upgrade to this one. Food for thought, though; I'll bring this (and your other comments) to the table. Just a couple of questions: Are you suggesting that you'd like an 8.5"x11" pdf version of this book made available so that you can use a standard-sized binder, to use instead of the book we published? That's what I'm hearing; just clarifying for myself that you're not talking about simply making one available to complement the existing book. Also, we're exploring better options for the binder fastenings; would flexible pins solve the problems you're experiencing? Or are you really wanting to use a three-ring binder? Thanks again for your post, and for your participation...and let me know if you have other questions. Thx. Laurel A Laurel If everything you do is based on the needs of your customers then I would expect you to make available a 3-ring binder with the proper cover or cover inserts for this book. I would not mind paying for this binder however I think a consideration should be that shipping is waved. We, the customer (you're customers), feel that an issue such as this effectively makes this book useless. In a previous post I've stated that I've put the binder aside and now have a stack of papers that is vulnerable to the damages and page losses any stack of papers are affected by. This makes my purchase funds virtually wasted and seriously tempts me to return the book. Another thing that you could provide for all of us who have purchased this book is a pdf download of the book on standard size paper. When I say standard I mean the kind of paper that is found in any office without having to purchase another ream of customized paper. I also mean a size that will fit into a 3-ring binder that is already in stock (either in the companies supply room or at the local office supply store. In my experience the most common paper and binder size is 8.5 x 11. Laurel Ruma stated that any resolutions to this binder issue will be available for future books and inferred that no consideration is going to be given to current customers only alienates O'Reillys current customers. This is not a good way to keep selling books in my opinion. I've italicized current in this post because an unacceptable resolution would seriously impair your list of current customers. If you don't believe me then just give it a try. He (she?) also stated that once the final release of Silverlight 2 is out this book would be issued in standard binding. Another consideration that you could give your current customers would be a seriously discounted price for this book. Afterall, we current customers are stuck with a less than desireable version of it. Your companies reply to these suggestions will be most interesting and would make a rather large impression on my desire to purchase more books from it. |
